Grammar and culture tips
Rain and snow
In Romani, the weather “gives” rain or snow: Del brišind. – It is raining (literally “It gives rain”). Del jiv. – It is snowing. Del kham. – The sun is shining.
Seasons
jevend (winter), ňilaj (summer), jara (spring). In winter = jevende, in summer = ňilaje, in spring = jarone.
Moon and month
Čhon means both the moon in the sky and a month of the calendar – just like the Czech word měsíc.
Cold and winter
Šil means cold, as in cold weather (Hin šil. – It is cold). Winter, the season, is jevend.
