Grammar and culture tips
Christmas
Christmas is Karačoňa or Karačoň, Christmas Eve Viľija or Veľija – both forms are common. “At Christmas” is pre Karačoňa.
Good wishes
To wish is vinšinel. The person you wish something to takes the ending -ke (the dative): Vinšinav tuke… – I wish you…, Vinšinav tumenge… – I wish you all…
Weddings
A wedding is bijav. The bride is bori – the same word also means daughter-in-law, a son's wife.
Musicians
No celebration is complete without music. Lavutaris is a musician, originally a violinist – from lavuta (violin).
